Planning a first-time Vaishno Devi yatra is exciting — and a little intimidating. Below is the no-nonsense checklist long-time pilgrims wish they had on their first trip.
1. Book the Right Train First
Direct trains to SVDK Katra (Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra) station save you a 50-km road transfer from Jammu Tawi. Vande Bharat Express, Sampark Kranti and Shri Shakti AC Express are the most reliable. Book 60 days in advance through IRCTC.
2. Carry Aadhaar — Always
The free RFID Yatra Slip can only be issued against a valid photo ID. Aadhaar with a matching mobile number is the smoothest combination. Foreigners need a passport.
3. Layer Your Clothes
Katra (base) can be 35°C; the Bhawan can be 12°C at night even in summer. Wear quick-dry t-shirt + light fleece + light shell jacket. Carry a stole for women to cover head inside the cave.
4. Eat Light Before the Trek
Heavy meals slow you down. Stick to fruits, light parathas or rajma-chawal at the SMVDSB langar. Drink small sips of water every 30 minutes — not a litre at one go.
5. Pick the Right Route
If you are walking, the Tarakote Marg (14 km) has a gentler gradient than the older Banganga route (13 km) and is wheelchair-friendly in most sections. If you are tight on time, book a helicopter.
6. Deposit Belongings at the Bhawan
Mobile phones, leather wallets and cameras are not allowed inside the cave. The cloakroom at Gate 3 is free and well-organised — keep your RFID slip handy.
7. Visit Bhairon Baba
The tradition is clear: the yatra is incomplete without darshan at the Bhairon Baba temple 2 km above the Bhawan. Take the 8-minute ropeway if you are tired.
8. Watch the Aarti
Try to align your trip so you are at the Bhawan around the morning or evening aarti. Even if you can’t get a slip to sit inside the cave, the live aarti darshan at the Bhawan plaza is moving.
9. Don’t Skip the Banganga Stream
Tradition says no yatra is complete without a quick rinse of the feet in Banganga, where Mata is said to have struck an arrow into the rocks to quench Hanuman’s thirst.
10. Plan a Buffer Day in Katra
Don’t try to fit darshan + Bhairon + train back to Delhi in 18 hours. Take a buffer day to rest. Katra has plenty of clean vegetarian dhabas and walking routes through the foothills.
