Plan Your Yatra in 4 Simple Steps
From train ticket to Bhawan darshan — here is the no-nonsense order of events for first-time pilgrims.
Book Train + Hotel
Book Vande Bharat or Shri Shakti Express to SVDK Katra station 60 days ahead. Pair with a Katra hotel walking distance to the Yatra Registration Counter.
Get Yatra Parchi (RFID)
Register free online or at any of the 24×7 Katra counters. Your RFID card is your pass at every checkpoint from Banganga to Bhawan.
Pick Your Route
Choose between the 13 km traditional route via Banganga, the gentler Tarakote Marg, or the 8-minute Sanjichhat helicopter.
Darshan + Bhairon
After Holy Cave darshan, take the 8-minute ropeway up to Bhairon Baba. Without that, tradition says the yatra is incomplete.

The Living Goddess of Trikuta
Mata Vaishno Devi is a Maha Shakti Peeth that has been continuously worshipped through Satya, Treta, Dvapara and Kali yugas. The shrine sits inside a natural cave on the Trikuta range where the Goddess manifests as three self-formed Pindis — Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati.
The shrine is administered by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB), established in 1986. It welcomes about 95 lakh pilgrims each year, second only to Tirumala in pan-India footfall.
Ardhkuwari & Garbh Joon
Halfway up the trek sits the Ardhkuwari shrine — the cave where Mata meditated for nine months while fleeing Bhairon Nath. Pilgrims crawl through the 15-foot Garbh Joon cave on knees and elbows; many regard it as a spiritual rebirth.
Free dormitory accommodation, langar, free medical posts and the token-batch entry system make this the natural overnight halt for first-time and senior-citizen pilgrims.
Even at 4 in the morning, the queue outside the cave moved like a single breath. By the time I reached the Pindis, I had forgotten how cold my feet were.
Why Pilgrims Trust Vaishno Devi Yatra Guide
Editorial Accuracy
Every page is reviewed against the latest SMVDSB notifications and reverified at the start of each yatra season. We log updates with dates so you can see when information was last checked.
Pilgrim-First Format
We answer the exact question a pilgrim asks — “what time is aarti”, “how much does helicopter cost”, “where to keep mobile phone” — not what marketing wants to sell.
No Booking Markup
We are an information service. We do not sell helicopter tickets, hotel rooms or VIP darshan. All booking links route directly to the official Shrine Board and Indian Railways.
