The Living Goddess of Trikuta
Mata Vaishno Devi is a Maha Shakti Peeth that has been continuously worshipped through Satya, Treta, Dvapara and Kali yugas. The shrine sits inside a natural cave on the Trikuta range where the Goddess manifests as three self-formed Pindis — Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati.
The shrine is administered by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB), established in 1986. It welcomes about 95 lakh pilgrims each year, second only to Tirumala in pan-India footfall.
Ardhkuwari & Garbh Joon
Halfway up the trek sits the Ardhkuwari shrine — the cave where Mata meditated for nine months while fleeing Bhairon Nath. Pilgrims crawl through the 15-foot Garbh Joon cave on knees and elbows; many regard it as a spiritual rebirth.
Free dormitory accommodation, langar, free medical posts and the token-batch entry system make this the natural overnight halt for first-time and senior-citizen pilgrims.
Even at 4 in the morning, the queue outside the cave moved like a single breath. By the time I reached the Pindis, I had forgotten how cold my feet were.

Yatra Status — Is Vaishno Devi Open Today?
The questions pilgrims ask most before they book. Short answers, and the official source for the one thing this page cannot tell you — today's status.
Is the Vaishno Devi yatra open right now?
Almost always, yes. The Shrine Board publishes no closing time for the Bhawan, and pilgrims climb through the night as well as through the day. The only routine pause is the twice-daily Atka Aarti, when darshan at the Holy Cave stops. The real exception is weather — during the monsoon the Shrine Board suspends the yatra on India Meteorological Department advisories, and in July 2026 it stayed suspended for six days. No guide page, including this one, can tell you today’s position; check the official Shrine Board site before you travel.
Does the Vaishno Devi cave ever close?
There is no annual closing day and no seasonal shutdown. Darshan runs continuously and stops only for the two aartis, which the Shrine Board performs just before sunrise and immediately after sunset — its own description notes that the procedure takes nearly two hours, during which darshan remains suspended. Because the aarti follows sunrise and sunset, its clock time drifts through the year rather than staying fixed. Everything mechanical on the mountain keeps daylight hours instead: the Bhawan–Bhairo ropeway runs 9 am to 5 pm, and battery cars and the Katra–Sanjichhat helicopter fly only in daylight and good visibility.
What actually stops the Vaishno Devi yatra?
Weather, in practice, and very little else. Heavy rain loosens the Trikuta slopes and brings landslides and shooting stones down onto the tracks, so the Shrine Board halts the yatra as a precaution when a heavy-rainfall advisory is issued. These suspensions are real and can run for days rather than hours — six days in July 2026, and close to three weeks after the Ardhkuwari landslide of 26 August 2025. They are also often partial: the older traditional track can reopen while the newer Tarakote marg, the battery cars and the helicopter stay suspended.
How do I check the yatra status before I travel?
Go to the source rather than to any guide. The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board posts yatra advisories and handles registration on maavaishnodevi.org, and the IMD’s Jammu forecast is the best early warning of a monsoon suspension. If you are travelling between July and September, read our monsoon yatra advisory as well, and keep one spare day in the plan — a suspended yatra is the commonest reason a trip has to be rebooked.
