Places to Visit Near Vaishno Devi (Katra & Jammu)
Plan an extra day or two — Shiv Khori, Patnitop, Sanasar, Jammu's temples, Bhaderwah and the Vaishno Devi nature park.
Why Add Side Trips Around Katra?
Most pilgrims allocate just 24–36 hours for the Vaishno Devi yatra. But the region around Katra, Reasi and Jammu has several spiritually and visually rewarding spots — many of which can be ticked off on the same trip with a day or two extra.
1. Shiv Khori — The Other Holy Cave
Distance: 80 km from Katra (2.5 hours by road).
A natural cave shrine of Shiva in a 200-metre-long limestone tunnel. The most famous self-manifested Lingam in Jammu, with a constant stream of water dripping from the rock above. The trek to the cave entrance is 3 km from the parking, taking about an hour. Combine with Vaishno Devi to complete the Shiv-Shakti darshan.
Best time: Maha Shivaratri (15 Feb 2026) attracts a huge fair. Cave is open 24×7.
2. Patnitop & Nathatop
Distance: 55 km from Katra (1.5 hours).
A hill station at 6,640 ft on the Jammu-Srinagar highway. Beautiful pine forests, Naag Devta temple, paragliding and zorbing. Nathatop nearby gets fresh snow Dec–Mar. Stay overnight at JKTDC Patnitop or private resorts.
3. Sanasar & Sanasar Lake
Distance: 65 km from Katra.
A meadow town higher than Patnitop. Famous for paragliding, golf and a small lake. Less crowded; great for a quiet day. Combine with Patnitop.
4. Bhaderwah Valley — “Mini Kashmir”
Distance: 200 km from Katra (6 hours).
The Doda region’s gem — alpine meadows, the Padri pass, Vasuki Nag temple and the historic Bhaderwah town. Plan a 2-night stay if combining with the yatra.
5. Jammu City Temples
| Temple | Distance | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Raghunath Temple, Jammu | 50 km | Largest Hindu temple complex in north India |
| Bahu Fort & Bawe Wali Mata | 52 km | 16th century Kali temple inside the fort |
| Peer Kho Cave Temple | 50 km | Ancient Shiva cave overlooking Tawi river |
| Mahamaya Temple | 51 km | City Kuldevi temple |
| Ranbireshwar Temple | 50 km | Shiva temple with 12 crystal lingas |
6. Vaishno Devi Sand & Ardhkuwari Nature Park
Free outdoor exhibits at the Banganga foothills explaining the history of the shrine, glacial formation of Trikuta hills and yatra timeline. Ideal one-hour stop while waiting for your slip.
7. Sukrala Mata Temple — Kathua District
Distance: 130 km from Katra. Devi temple founded by Sage Anatya Goswami, surrounded by deodar forests. Connects to the Vaishno Devi devotee circuit.
8. Mata Sukrala & Bahu Mata Triangle
Devotees who complete Vaishno Devi often pair it with Mata Sukrala, Bahu Mata and Mata Mahamaya — the so-called “Shakti circuit of Jammu“.
9. Adventure Activities Near Katra
- River rafting on the Chenab (near Reasi)
- Trekking to Sansar Lake and Mantalai
- Skiing at Nathatop (Dec – Feb)
- Birdwatching in the Surinsar-Mansar wetland
10. Mansar Lake — A Spiritual Day Trip
62 km from Katra, near Samba. A holy lake mentioned in the Mahabharata. Sheshnag temple on the banks, boating, and an annual fair on Baisakhi. Good half-day add-on.

Plan smart: Most side trips combine well with a 3-day Vaishno Devi itinerary. Read our yatra guide for a sample 3-day plan.
