Bhairon Baba Temple — Why Your Yatra is Incomplete Without It
2 km above the Bhawan, at the highest point of Trikuta peak — the legend, the ropeway, the trek and the timings.
The Legend of Bhairon Nath
Bhairon Nath was a tantric who became obsessed with the divine girl at Pandit Sridhar’s bhandara — the form Mata Vaishno Devi had taken. He pursued her up the Trikuta range for many years. When she finally took her cosmic form and beheaded him with her divine sword (the khadga), Bhairon’s head flew from the Holy Cave entrance and landed two kilometres up the mountain, at the highest point of Trikuta peak. His body remained near the cave.
In his final moments Bhairon repented and prayed for forgiveness. The Goddess, ever-merciful, granted him moksha and decreed that no Vaishno Devi yatra would be complete unless the pilgrim also offered prayers at Bhairon’s shrine — and that anyone who skipped this final step would have to return for darshan again. This is why nearly every Vaishno Devi pilgrim — even after a 13 km trek and full darshan — climbs the additional two kilometres to Bhairon Baba.
