Himkoti Marg Vaishno Devi: New Track, Distance, Battery Car & Today’s Status

Updated: 28 October 2026Reviewed by: Vaishno Devi Yatra Guide Editorial DeskVerified against: SMVDSB notifications

Himkoti Marg Vaishno Devi is the alternate walking route between Adhkuwari and Bhawan, offering pilgrims a gentler climb through the Trikuta Hills. It is also the route associated with the Shrine Board’s battery-car service. But one question matters before you set out: can you actually use this track on the day of your yatra?

The route has faced weather-related disruption, so an old reopening report cannot confirm today’s conditions. This guide explains the distance, route, facilities, battery-car arrangements and the safest way to check the latest advisory.

What Is Himkoti Marg Vaishno Devi?

Himkoti Marg Vaishno Devi refers to the newer alternate track that pilgrims use after reaching Adhkuwari. Unlike the traditional route through the steeper Hathimatha section, this path follows a more gradual slope toward Bhawan. Himkoti itself is a viewpoint and stopping point along the way.

The Shrine Board developed the track to reduce crowding and separate walkers from pony traffic. It opened to pilgrims in 1999. The Board describes it as approximately 500 metres shorter than the corresponding old-track section.

That figure needs context. It does not mean the whole Katra-to-Bhawan journey becomes just a few kilometres long. Pilgrims still have to reach Adhkuwari before joining this upper route.

For official background, see the Shrine Board’s alternate-track description.

Himkoti Marg Vaishno Devi Distance and Route Map

According to the Shrine Board’s distance chart, Himkoti lies 8.5 km from Katra, while Bhawan lies 13 km from Katra. Adhkuwari appears at the 6 km mark. These figures provide useful route reference points, but they do not represent the precise length of every possible walking path.

The distance from Adhkuwari to Himkoti is approximately 2.5 km when calculated from those published markers. Meanwhile, the difference between the Himkoti and Bhawan markers is about 4.5 km. The actual approach can vary with the designated path and local diversions.

Location Distance from Katra Why it matters
Katra 0 km Base town and registration
Banganga 1 km Traditional route checkpoint
Adhkuwari 6 km Access to alternate upper track
Himkoti 8.5 km Viewpoint and rest stop
Sanjichhat 9.5 km Separate upper-route landmark
Bhawan 13 km Holy Shrine complex

Where Does the Himkoti Track Start?

The alternate track starts below Adhkuwari near the Inderprastha viewpoint. Pilgrims reach this area after climbing from Katra by an authorised lower route. They can then follow the available signposted route towards Himkoti and Bhawan.

Do not confuse the upper Himkoti track with the Tarakote Marg from Katra. Tarakote is a different lower approach that joins the pilgrimage route near Adhkuwari. Himkoti belongs to the upper section.

Is Himkoti Marg Vaishno Devi Open Today?

The live operating status of Himkoti Marg Vaishno Devi has not been independently confirmed for 28 October 2026. The route has experienced landslide-related disruption, and a past closure or reopening report cannot establish its present condition. Check the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board’s latest instructions on your travel day.

Track availability can change because of rain, slope instability, repairs or crowd-management decisions. The Board may also direct pilgrims to a different approved route when necessary.

For that reason, do not rely on the general statement that Vaishno Devi yatra operates throughout the day. Overall pilgrimage operations and access to a particular track are separate matters.

How to Check the Himkoti Track Status

  1. Open www.maavaishnodevi.org, the official Shrine Board website.
  2. Look for the newest yatra announcements, track notices and weather advisories.
  3. Check updates from the Board’s verified X account, @OfficialSMVDSB.
  4. Review India Meteorological Department weather warnings if rain or storms are forecast.
  5. On arrival, confirm the permitted route with Shrine Board personnel at Katra or Adhkuwari.

A general weather forecast cannot confirm track access. Similarly, a social media video may show conditions from a previous day. The Board’s current operating instructions must take priority.

If an official notice does not clearly name Himkoti, seek direct clarification from authorised staff before proceeding.

Why Landslide Reports Matter on Himkoti Marg

Himkoti runs through mountainous terrain, where heavy rainfall can affect slopes and walking surfaces. A reported landslide-related shutdown on 29 August is a reason to check the latest advisory, not evidence of the route’s current status.

The available reporting does not establish a reliable current opening position for this guide. Therefore, we are not assigning a reopening date or assuming that access has resumed.

Even after a route receives permission to operate, later rain can trigger fresh restrictions. This is why a same-day check matters more than an old news headline.

Himkoti Marg Vaishno Devi Battery Car Service

The Shrine Board operates battery vehicles on the alternate track between the Adhkuwari area and Bhawan. This facility can reduce the need to walk the upper portion of the pilgrimage. However, bookings depend on seat availability, operational conditions and the Board’s applicable eligibility rules.

The official description identifies Inderprastha near Adhkuwari and Manokamana Bhawan as service points. The Board also states that the facility serves pilgrims with illness, disabilities and other mobility difficulties.

Senior citizens and pilgrims who need assistance should check current eligibility and priority arrangements rather than assuming every passenger can obtain a seat.

How to Book the Himkoti Battery Car

  1. Visit the official SMVDSB online services portal.
  2. Check the battery-car booking option and the applicable travel date.
  3. Read the displayed passenger rules, availability and departure arrangements.
  4. Complete a reservation only through the official Shrine Board system.
  5. If online seats are unavailable, ask authorised personnel whether current-counter booking is operating.

The Shrine Board’s published administrative information also describes counter arrangements at the route endpoints. However, counter access and seat allocation can change. A counter visit does not guarantee a ticket.

Important: Battery cars do not provide a direct Katra-to-Bhawan ride. The upper service starts around Adhkuwari, so you must separately plan how to reach that point.

Himkoti Battery Car Fare and Timings

We could not verify the currently applicable battery-car fare from a sufficiently recent official tariff. Therefore, this guide deliberately does not print a rupee amount. Check the live price inside the Shrine Board’s booking system before making any payment.

Likewise, do not assume a historic published timetable applies to your journey. Operating hours can change with weather, passenger demand and track instructions.

Confirm both your departure point and boarding arrangements when booking. A ticket for one direction should not automatically be treated as a return reservation.

Himkoti Marg Versus the Old Vaishno Devi Track

The main advantage of Himkoti is its more even climbing gradient and separation from pony traffic. The old route offers different transport possibilities, so it may suit pilgrims who need animal-assisted travel or a palanquin.

Feature Himkoti alternate track Traditional upper route
Gradient More gradual Includes steeper sections
Ponies Not permitted Subject to authorised arrangements
Battery car Designated service Not the battery-car corridor
Route length About 500 m shorter Longer equivalent section
Key consideration Current track access Current diversions and services

That does not make one route universally better. A healthy walker may prefer the even slope, while a pilgrim needing a pony may require the traditional route.

Our Banganga route guide explains the lower traditional approach and how it connects with the rest of the yatra.

Facilities Available Around Himkoti

The Shrine Board lists drinking water, refreshment outlets, toilets, viewpoints and shelter sheds on the alternate track. Himkoti viewpoint is one of the named refreshment areas. These facilities help walkers break the upper climb into manageable stages.

However, the presence of shelters does not make a route safe during an official weather warning. Avoid staying near unstable slopes, drains or barricaded stretches. Follow the staff’s instructions if a section needs evacuation or diversion.

Bring water and essential medication even when facilities normally operate along the track. A service point may become inaccessible during a disruption.

Is Himkoti Marg Suitable for Senior Citizens?

The gentler slope can help older pilgrims who are able to walk uphill. Still, Himkoti is a mountain route, and a gradual climb remains physically demanding. Battery-car access may reduce walking, but availability and eligibility are not guaranteed.

Families should consider the entire journey, including the climb from Katra to Adhkuwari. The upper battery-car service does not eliminate that lower section.

Our Vaishno Devi senior citizen yatra guide covers assisted transport and ways to reduce physical strain.

Health and safety: Anyone with heart disease, breathing difficulties, limited mobility or another significant medical condition should consult a doctor before the trek. Carry prescribed medicines, use safe footwear and take regular breaks. Seek medical help if you experience chest pain, severe breathlessness or dizziness.

Planning Ardhkuwari Darshan Before Himkoti

Adhkuwari is an important pilgrimage stop before the alternate upper track. Pilgrims may also wish to visit the Garbh Joon cave, but its queue and access arrangements require separate planning.

If you intend to visit the cave, allow extra time instead of assuming you can immediately continue towards Himkoti. Long waits may affect your battery-car reservation or the rest of your schedule.

Read our Garbh Joon cave timings and access guide before setting your itinerary.

A useful planning principle is to separate three decisions: cave darshan, the permitted route towards Bhawan, and your battery-car reservation. They involve different queues and operating conditions.

What If Himkoti Marg Is Not Available?

If authorities restrict Himkoti access, do not attempt to bypass barriers or use an unofficial trail. Ask Shrine Board staff which authorised route pilgrims may use. An alternative route is possible only when the authorities permit it.

Your fallback depends on the reason for the restriction:

  1. Track-specific restriction: Ask staff whether the traditional route is available and suitable for your group.
  2. Heavy rain or landslide alert: Follow official instructions and postpone movement if authorities advise it.
  3. Battery-car service unavailable: Ask about authorised alternatives or change your plans if you cannot safely walk.
  4. Wider yatra suspension: Remain at an authorised safe location until officials allow movement.

Do not assume another route stays usable merely because Himkoti faces a restriction. Weather conditions may affect several sections at once.

Also, a booked vehicle seat does not override official safety restrictions. Follow the Shrine Board’s directions concerning cancellations, rescheduling and refunds.

Mistakes to Avoid on the Himkoti Route

Confusing Himkoti with Tarakote: Tarakote is a lower approach from Katra. Himkoti is on the upper alternate track beyond Adhkuwari.

Misreading the distance: The 8.5 km figure refers to Himkoti’s distance from Katra. It is not the length of the Himkoti-to-Bhawan walk.

Assuming shorter means effortless: The alternate route has a gentler gradient, but you still face an uphill mountain journey.

Depending on an old battery-car fare: Historic prices can remain visible in search results. Always use the current official booking amount.

Trusting an old reopening report: Yesterday’s approval does not prove today’s access. Check conditions before leaving Katra and again at the relevant junction.

Before You Leave Katra

  • Complete the Shrine Board’s required yatra registration and obtain your RFID yatra card.
  • Check the official track advisory for Himkoti and the other authorised routes.
  • Confirm any battery-car reservation through the Board’s own booking system.
  • Review the weather warning, especially during heavy-rain periods.
  • Carry photo identification, medicines, water and footwear with good grip.
  • Allow time for delays at Adhkuwari and Bhawan.
  • Follow all instructions from Shrine Board, security and medical personnel.

For the Board’s current safety instructions, consult its official yatra do’s and don’ts.

Before You Go

Himkoti Marg Vaishno Devi is a useful upper-route option because its gentler gradient and battery-car corridor can make the journey more manageable. Yet the track’s live status matters more than its usual advantages.

Check the Shrine Board’s latest notices before your trek. Confirm battery-car eligibility, price and availability only through official channels. If authorities direct pilgrims away from Himkoti, use the approved alternative or revise your travel plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Himkoti Marg Vaishno Devi open today?

We could not independently confirm the route’s operating status for 28 October 2026. Access may change due to weather, repairs or safety restrictions. Check the official Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board website and follow local staff instructions on your travel day.

What is the distance of Himkoti Marg from Katra?

The Shrine Board lists Himkoti at 8.5 km from Katra. Adhkuwari appears at 6 km, while Bhawan appears at 13 km. These are published route markers, not a precise measurement of every possible alternate-path segment.

How much does the Himkoti battery car cost?

The current fare could not be reliably verified for this guide. Check the amount shown on the official Shrine Board booking portal. Do not depend on prices from older blogs or screenshots.

Where does the Himkoti battery car start?

The Shrine Board identifies the Inderprastha area near Adhkuwari as a battery-car service point. The service travels towards the Bhawan area. Check your confirmed booking for the exact boarding location and instructions.

Are ponies allowed on Himkoti Marg?

No. The Shrine Board describes the alternate track as a route without pony movement. Pilgrims needing pony or palanquin assistance should ask authorised personnel about permitted arrangements on other routes.

Is Himkoti Marg the same as Tarakote Marg?

No. Tarakote Marg starts from the Katra side and connects towards Adhkuwari. Himkoti lies on the upper alternate track between Adhkuwari and Bhawan. Both can form parts of a pilgrimage plan, depending on current route instructions.

Can senior citizens use the Himkoti battery car?

Senior citizens and pilgrims with mobility difficulties may receive priority under the Board’s applicable rules. However, seat allocation and eligibility depend on current arrangements. Check official booking conditions before relying on the service.

Is the Himkoti track shorter than the old track?

The Shrine Board says the alternate upper track is approximately 500 metres shorter than the corresponding old section. That difference does not reduce the complete Katra-to-Bhawan trek to a short walk.

What should I do if the Himkoti route is restricted?

Follow the latest Shrine Board advisory and ask staff about authorised routes. Never bypass a safety barrier or take a hillside shortcut. If severe weather affects the wider yatra, postpone the trek until officials permit movement.
